When
The Regular Season Begins in September 2023 and runs through March 2024.
Where
Practices and home games are held at rinks and facilities across Central Ohio. Players may practice at any Chiller (most often Chiller Ice Works or Chiller North), the Battery Hockey Academy Training Center (Dublin Ohio), and, on weekends, at the Lou & Gibb Reese Ice Rink (Newark, Ohio). Occasionally a team may get a practice at the OSU Ice Rink. "Home" Games may be played at the same facilities (excepting Battery).
Practices
Teams Practices vary by team. Our practices are weekend heavy (it will not be uncommon to expect 1-2 practices a week on Saturday or Sunday)
Please note that to get to our target number of practice hours, our U12 and U14 teams are expected to continue to have a regular 5:45am practice on either Thursday (Chiller North) or Friday (Chiller Easton) once the season starts.
Games
We play an independent schedule.
Our U10 Teams will target 25 games (+/- 5), our U12 teams will target 35 games (+/- 5) and our bantam teams will target 45 games (+/- 5) over the course of the season.
Most games will occur on the weekends.
Jerseys
EDP Spider jerseys are required and will be purchased during the summer, along with socks (Black and White for U14, Red and White for U12 and U10).
Red helmets will be required this year for all ages.
Frequently Asked Questions
When are teams formed?
Teams are formed from Academy members who accept invitations into the program.
If there is more than 1 team at any age bracket, the rosters will NOT be set until a professional style pre-season camp in August to allow for players to be incentivized to continue to improve in the off season, to follow our summer skills challenges, and to get a unique (for this area) opportunity to compete for spots in a manner similar to how junior and professional programs operate with their contracted players.
Do the EDP fees not cover anything?
EDP fees cover practices, including ice, coaching and the like. They do not cover either games or game related expenses or the more typical hockey expenses such as jerseys, socks, equipment, spirit wear, player game travel or similar costs.
The Columbus Youth Development Association ("CYDA") is a 501(c) association that arranges and pays for games and game related expenses (team tournament entry fees, referee costs, game ice costs, out of town coaching expenses (mileage/hotel/per diem), as well as miscellaneous game and association costs (scoresheets, myhockey, web hosting, USA Hockey required expenses (background check/CEP classes/Safe Sport Training), and need based scholarship opportunities, etc.).
CYDA does not set its fees until the board and tournament director have a chance to meet and review anticipated costs over the summer. Last season the CYDA fees ranged between approximately $700-$1,000, with the younger ages falling on the lower end and the older on the upper. For planning purposes, please assume the 2023-24 CYDA fees will likely be in that same general range, understanding that inflation may push them slightly higher at each age.
