Week 3 Themes for the EDP Summer Skills Series
Welcome to Week 3 of the Elite Development Program Summer 2022 Skills Series!
Our U14 and high school skaters will hit the ice Tuesday with the theme “Using Linear Crossovers to Burn the Competition.” What are linear crossovers? If you watch the top levels of hockey, you assuredly have seen hundreds of linear crossovers.
Most people think of crossovers as something you do to turn corners and change direction, but elite skaters use crossovers – linear crossovers – while skating forward (down the ice). Doing so has a host of advantages that not only makes the players faster but more difficult to defend.
Darryl Belfry published a study showing that on average top line players in the NHL do two to three times more linear crossovers when they have the puck than 3rd- and 4th-liners. This is a complex but easily translatable skill whose use can elevate OUR players.
Tuesday evening, our U14 and HS skaters will work through a linear crossover progression.
For our EDP U10s and U12s, the theme for Thursday night will be “In Game Use of Pivots and Mohawks to Open up the Ice.”
The reason players work on mohawk turns and pivots is because they are an invaluable tool in the skill toolbox! But being able to pivot or mohawk in isolation isn't terribly helpful if the player never translates that skill into on-ice performance. That requires using them with pucks and understanding when, why, and how to use them in game situations.
This week our U10 and U12s will get this tremendously helpful practice and instruction that will enable them to (a) become better at these skills, and (b) better use these advanced skating skills in games.
Our goalies will work on “Lateral Movements and Post Integrations … and Extraction” to help them improve. moving into and off the posts.
